Character Representation: Noor Bibi

There was a drama named “NOOR BIBI” released in 2017, based on a character who is a con artist who has convinced people around her that her supposed powers help heal people. She manages to show her evil skills off as almost divine, god gifted which in turn persuades everyone. Truth be told, the woman deals with black magic and the manipulation of spirits.

As fictional as it sounds, this character portrays a very dark reality that exists all around us in Pakistan in the concept of “black magic” or magic in general has been a part of human cultures and beliefs for millennia. Different societies have various beliefs about magic, witchcraft, sorcery, and supernatural powers. However, it’s essential to differentiate between cultural and religious beliefs about magic and the objective reality of these phenomena There are many occurrences of black magic, many stories circulate and entertain many inter-family conversations. In many cases, what may seem like “black magic” could be attributed to misunderstandings, sleight of hand, psychological manipulation, or even staged performances. People can be easily fooled by illusions and tricks that appear magical or supernatural.

In my opinion, every Pakistani family would be familiar with at least one individual who practices these acts. Taking religion into consideration, it is strictly prohibited. However, many believe for it to be effective in their lives and faith despite knowing how dealing with these metaphysical entities has opposite and complex results in their own lives. It’s important to maintain a cynical and rational approach when assessing claims of black magic or any supernatural occurrences. Critical thinking and seeking scientific explanations for observed events can help us better understand the world around us and avoid falling into delusion or fantasies.
